According to Better Health Victoria, about one in four Australian children are overweight or obese, and if the current rate of childhood obesity continues, it is predicted that almost two in three Australians will be overweight or obese by 2020.
These are sobering statistics, but don’t come as a surprise to many Australian parents who are well aware of the childhood obesity epidemic.
“There have been countless media reports about childhood obesity and the associated health effects, but far less information about what we should actually do about it,” says Lisa Norgate, founder of Melbourne-based Cool Kidz’ Mealz.
“Parents and even kids themselves are all so time poor these days, and it can be difficult to find the time required to cook good nutritious food on a regular basis. So instead of simply making parents feel guilty about that, it’s time that we focus on providing real tools that families can realistically use to improve kids’ diets without needing to reinvent the wheel.”
This is Norgate’s thinking behind Cool Kidz’ Mealz – a range of nutritionally balanced frozen meals that have been designed for kids between the ages of 4 and 12.
“My inspiration evolved from not being able to find healthy, nutritious and tasty meals with generous proportions for older children,” says Norgate. “Almost every product I found was poor in nutrients, full of artificial colours and flavours, and high in sugar, sodium and fat.”
So Norgate developed a range of healthy frozen meals that are not only high in nutritional value, but also convenient for parents and appealing to picky eaters.
“All Cool Kidz’ Mealz have been assessed by nutritionists, are prepared in a HACCP-certified commercial kitchen and are flash frozen to seal in freshness. Our meals also cater to the fussiest of eaters. For example, our macaroni and cheese contains four types of vegetables but they are hidden in the sauce so kids aren’t even aware they’re eating veggies.”
Cool Kidz’ Mealz has launched with a range of five healthy meals that can be ordered online and home delivered within the Melbourne metro area. Bulk orders can be delivered to homes in regional Victoria and to childcare facilities and schools across Victoria by prior arrangement.
However, Norgate is quick to point out that Cool Kidz’ Mealz is not a diet plan, and does not claim that the meals will help kids lose weight.
“This is not a diet or weight-loss product,” says Norgate. “I simply want children to experience the true joys of eating really great tasting and nutritious food, and for parents to feel proud to serve our meals to their children with no stress.”
